Vehicle access control

Campuses, workplaces, private estates, depots and gated sites already recognise vehicles at the barrier. What they cannot see is who is inside the vehicle, or whether that person is authorised to be there at all. Trust App's patented method could close that gap.

How vehicle access control works today

Most sites follow the same pattern. A camera reads the number plate at the entrance, the plate is checked against an allowlist, and the barrier lifts if it matches. People, meanwhile, are managed on entirely separate systems: staff passes, visitor books, intercoms and sign-in desks. Where the two need to agree, a security officer stands at the gate and checks.

Access control is about permissions rather than payments, and that raises the stakes. The question at the barrier is not whether someone will pay, but whether the right person is being let in. Everything still hangs on one data point: the plate.

Where the plate-only model hurts

An allowlisted plate admits the vehicle regardless of who is behind the wheel. A borrowed, sold or stolen vehicle carries its permissions with it, and the site has no way of knowing the difference at the barrier.

Vehicle systems and person systems do not talk

The barrier knows about plates. The pass system knows about people. Because the two are separate, there is no assurance that the vehicle at the gate and the person driving it belong together, even when both are individually authorised.

Misreads cut both ways

A misread plate either blocks an authorised vehicle at the barrier, causing queues and calls to security, or matches the wrong entry on the allowlist and admits a vehicle that should have been stopped.

Unreadable plates force a human fallback

When the camera cannot read a plate at all, someone has to intervene at the barrier. That manual fallback is exactly the cost the automated gate was meant to remove, and it becomes the default path for every dirty or damaged plate.

Visitor management is manual and error-prone

Expected visitors are handled with emailed plate numbers, gatehouse lists and phone calls. Plates are mistyped, visitors arrive in a different vehicle than the one booked, and the gatehouse ends up making judgement calls under pressure.

For a site operator or security team, the technology question is secondary. What matters is what the entrance has to achieve, what gets in the way, and what could improve.

What you need to achieve

Admit authorised people and vehicles promptly, keep unauthorised ones out, handle visitors and contractors smoothly, keep a defensible record of entries, and do all of it without a queue at the barrier.

What gets in the way

Permissions that follow the plate rather than the person, separate vehicle and person systems that cannot be reconciled at the gate, manual interventions for misreads and visitors, and entry records that show a vehicle but not who was in it.

What could improve

Access assurance that the vehicle and an authorised person arrived together, visitor arrivals that confirm themselves, fewer manual checks at the barrier, and an entry record tied to a verified person as well as a plate.

How the patented method could apply

  • Access verified to person and vehicle together. Entry could be granted on the verified combination of a recognised vehicle and an authorised person's registered device at the entrance, rather than on the plate alone. A vehicle without its authorised person, or a person in the wrong vehicle, would no longer look the same as a legitimate arrival.
  • Visitor arrivals that confirm themselves. Visitor access could verify that the expected visitor is actually present in the expected vehicle, replacing mistyped plate lists and gatehouse phone calls with a check that happens as the vehicle arrives.
  • Fewer manual checks at barriers. Where a registered person is verified as present, an unreadable or uncertain plate need not mean a security officer walking to the barrier. The human fallback could be reserved for genuinely unknown arrivals.
  • An auditable record of entry. Each verified entry could record who entered, with which vehicle, and when, giving security and compliance teams something firmer than a plate read and a camera image.

Each of these would be built by or with a partner into the site's existing access-control systems. None of them exists as a Trust product today, and the precise design would depend on the site, its rules and its suppliers.
