Missed plate reads mean missed revenue

Every ANPR-based payment model has the same silent failure mode. When the camera cannot read the plate cleanly, there is usually no charge at all. The service is delivered, the barrier lifts, the vehicle passes, and nobody pays.

Why it happens

No camera reads every plate. Dirt, damage, glare, weather, obscured characters, non-standard fonts and awkward angles all produce reads that are missing, partial or too uncertain to act on. A partial read is particularly frustrating: the system has most of the answer, but not enough of it to charge anyone, so the transaction is simply dropped.

What it costs

Individually, each missed read is small. At the volumes a car park, forecourt or charging scheme handles, they accumulate into a steady leak of revenue that is rarely measured because, by definition, the failed transactions leave little trace. The same gap undermines enforcement: a vehicle that cannot be read cannot be checked against permits, accounts or exemptions either.

Parking

Ticketless and barrier-free car parks depend entirely on the read. A missed read is a free stay, and a partial read is an unenforceable one.

Clean Air Zones and road-user charging

Unreadable plates at a zone boundary become charges that are never raised, across very large daily volumes of entries.

Fuel and EV charging

Pay-by-plate fuelling and charger authorisation fail closed or fail free when the read fails, and either outcome costs the operator.

Access control and logistics

A gate that cannot read a plate needs a human fallback, which is exactly the cost the automation was meant to remove.

How verified presence changes it

The patented method gives the system a second signal: which registered customers' devices are present at the location. That means the match can work in both directions.

  • Partial reads can be completed. An uncertain or incomplete plate read can be checked against the registered customers present at that location, turning a dropped transaction into a confident match.
  • Missed reads need not mean missed payment. Where a registered account holder is verified as present, a payment or permission can still proceed even when the camera alone would have failed.
  • Confidence becomes measurable. Operators gain a way of distinguishing a genuine unknown vehicle from a known customer whose plate simply did not read.

Implementation would be built by or with a partner into their own systems, and recovery rates would depend on the setting and the share of customers registered. None of this exists as a Trust product today.
