A drive-thru lane serves whoever pulls in, but the operator usually has no idea who that is until the car reaches the window. Loyalty, pre-orders and personalisation all depend on the customer announcing themselves. Trust App's patented method could let the lane recognise a registered customer on arrival.

How drive-thru service works today

A vehicle joins the lane, the order is taken at a speaker post or by an order taker, and payment and handover happen at one or two windows. Loyalty is applied when the customer scans an app or reads out a code, and a pre-order placed in an app is matched to the car by the customer saying a name or order number. Some operators add plate recognition to link an arriving vehicle to a previous order history.

Every one of those steps happens while the queue is moving, and speed of service is the number the whole operation is managed against. Anything that adds seconds at the speaker or the window is a cost, so identification tends to be skipped rather than slow the lane down.

Where the plate-only model hurts

The operator does not know who is arriving

Until the window, the customer is anonymous. Loyalty points, saved preferences and pre-orders all rely on manual steps: scanning an app, reading a code, saying a name. Each step takes time, and each is often skipped in a busy lane.

A plate is not a person

Plate recognition can suggest a vehicle has been seen before, but it cannot tell which family member or colleague is in the car today. Greeting the wrong person by name, or charging the wrong loyalty account, is worse than doing nothing.

A missed read is a missed moment

Dirt, angle, light and traffic all defeat cameras. When the read fails, the recognition moment fails with it: no greeting, no linked pre-order, no loyalty credit, and a customer who wonders why the app made a promise the lane did not keep.

Queue time is the business

Drive-thru revenue rises and falls with how fast the lane moves. Any identification step that depends on the customer fumbling with a phone at the window slows every car behind them, so manual loyalty and pre-order matching work against the metric that matters most.

How the patented method could apply

  • Recognising the arriving customer. A registered customer's vehicle and device could be recognised together as the car joins the lane, matching them to their loyalty account before they reach the speaker. No scan, no code, no delay.
  • Pre-orders ready at the window. A pre-order could be linked to the arriving vehicle and the verified person in it, so preparation is timed to their arrival and the order is ready as they pull up.
  • Personalisation for the right person. A greeting, a usual order or a suggestion could be offered to the individual verified as present, rather than to whoever a plate was once associated with.
  • A faster lane. With identification handled before the window, the manual steps that slow service could be removed, which may reduce waiting time across the queue.

Each of these would be built by or with a partner into the operator's existing ordering, loyalty and kitchen systems. None of them exists as a Trust product today, and the precise design would depend on the operator, its estate and its technology suppliers.
