Toll roads
A toll system knows which vehicles crossed. What it cannot see is who was driving, which account should pay, or whether anyone authorised a payment at all. Trust App's patented method could close that gap.
How tolling works today
Whether the road uses barriers or free-flow gantries, most modern tolling follows the same pattern. Cameras read the number plate at the crossing, the plate is matched to a pre-paid account or tag where one exists, and everyone else is expected to pay within a set window. If no payment arrives, a penalty notice is issued to the registered keeper. Free-flow tolling removes the barrier and the queue, but it makes the plate read carry even more weight: there is no booth, no barrier and no second chance to identify the customer.
The model works, but everything hangs on one data point: the plate. That creates a set of familiar operational problems.

Where the plate-only model hurts
Missed reads are uncollected tolls
A plate that is dirty, damaged, obscured or read with too little confidence often means no toll is collected at all. The vehicle uses the road and nobody pays. Across the daily volumes a busy crossing handles, that becomes a steady leak of revenue.
Misreads pursue the wrong person
A plate misread as a similar one belonging to someone else turns into a toll charge or penalty notice sent to a driver who was never on the road. Each one generates an appeal, staff time and reputational damage.
Keeper versus driver disputes
Charges and penalties go to the registered keeper, who may not have been driving. Hire cars, pool vehicles, fleets and household cars all produce disputes that are slow to resolve on plate evidence alone.
Payment friction penalises occasional users
Free-flow tolling asks occasional drivers to remember an unfamiliar payment website and a fixed deadline. Honest drivers who forget become penalty cases, which is expensive to administer and corrosive to public goodwill towards the road.
A plate read is not authorisation
Plates are visible to everyone and can be cloned. A tolling account charged on a plate read alone has no second factor confirming that the account holder, or their vehicle, was really there.

Revenue leakage from unreadable plates, appeal and cancellation workloads from misreads, keeper-versus-driver disputes, and the administrative cost of chasing occasional users who simply forgot to pay.

Tolls that follow a verified account rather than a plate, missed reads recovered rather than written off, fewer wrongly issued notices, and stronger evidence when a charge is challenged.
How the patented method could apply
- Account-based tolling verified to the person. A registered user's vehicle and device are recognised together at the crossing, and the toll is applied to their account automatically. No payment window to remember, and no accidental penalty for an honest driver. Where a car is shared, the toll could follow the registered user verified as present in the vehicle, with a nominated default account applying when more than one registered user is travelling together, rather than always landing on the keeper.
- Missed and partial reads can be recovered. An unreadable or uncertain plate read could be cross-checked against the registered accounts present at the crossing, turning an uncollected toll into a completed transaction.
- A second check before penalties. Before a notice is issued on an uncertain read, the system could check whether a matching account holder was actually present, reducing wrongly issued notices and the appeals that follow them.
- Better evidence for disputes. A record that an account holder's device was, or was not, present at the crossing gives both sides of a keeper-versus-driver dispute something firmer than a camera image.
Each of these would be built by or with a partner into the operator's existing tolling and back-office systems. None of them exists as a Trust product today, and the precise design would depend on the road, its charging rules and its suppliers.
